Fronteer Open Call – Botanicals

 

Fronteer – an arts initiative by myself and Sharon Mossbeck – presents Botanicals, a group exhibition featuring art work relating to a botanical theme.

The theme can be interpreted however you wish, and does not need to be overtly botanical. Work can be in any medium, either 2D or sculptural. The exhibition will not include any video or audio works.

We are looking for high quality work to form a stylised exhibition with an exhibition catalogue to accompany it. The exhibition will take place in the newly refurbished North Gallery at Exchange Place Studios, Sheffield for three weeks in July 2019.

Artists from all backgrounds are invited to submit one piece of work (or a set of pieces which amount to one work, e.g. a triptych). It is free to submit, with only those artists who are successful paying a £30 entry fee, and this includes a copy of the exhibition catalogue.

Work must be complete at the time of submission. Work can be offered for sale during the exhibition, and we will charge 10% commission.

The deadline for submissions is 10pm on Sunday 14th April and successful artists will be notified by email by Sunday 28th April.

If successful, you will be invited to send or deliver your work to Exchange Place Studios, Sheffield, UK, where Fronteer is based. Your work must reach us by no later than Friday 14th June. If you wish to bring your work in person you can do so on 2nd or 3rd July, 11am-4pm.

The £30 entry fee for successful artists can be paid via Paypal or bank transfer by Friday 14th June (midnight). You can also pay in cash in person on 2nd or 3rd July 11am-4pm.

The exhibition will run from Monday 8th – Sat 27th July, 11-4 daily (except Sundays), with a related programme of events taking place throughout.

How to Submit

Artists are invited to submit ONE piece of work.

Work can be 2D or 3D, though unfortunately we cannot accept video or audio works. Works which require hanging must be ready to hang with mirror plates or picture wire already attached.

If successful your work will be featured in an exhibition catalogue. As such, we are require the photographs which accompany your submission to sent as jpegs at 300 dpi, and images should be between 1mb and 3mb.

Please submit by email to fronteerart@gmail.com along with the following:

  • Your name
  • Title of the piece
  • Medium
  • Dimensions of the piece
  • Up to 3 300dpi images of your piece
  • If your work will be offered for sale, and if so, what price.
  • Up to 50 words about the work, written in the third person (this text will be included in the catalogue if you are successful)
  • Up to 50 words about yourself, written in the third person (this text will be included in the catalogue if you are successful)

All work must be complete at the time of submission. Any work which varies from the original piece submitted will be rejected. It is important that images submitted should fit the specifications outlined. If you enter more than one submission, all of your entries will be rejected. If you wish to submit a print, it will be your responsibility to print it off before posting it to us.

Open Call for an Exhibition in Athens – ‘Stars’

Fronteer presents Stars, an open call to submit work for an exhibition in Athens, Greece in May 2018.

Fronteer is an arts initiative hosted by myself and artist Sharon Mossbeck that seeks to provide creative opportunities and events both nationally and internationally.

We are asking artists to submit artwork based on the theme of stars for an exhibition at Platforms Project 18 in Athens. The exhibition will house work created by Fronteer artists based on the solar system alongside stars created by artists successful in this open call. You may interpret the theme of stars however you wish, but do bear in mind we’re looking for work to complement Fronteer’s solar system work.

For Stars we are looking for small scale works (no bigger than 25cm across any one side.) The open call is free to enter, and artists are invited to submit one piece of work for consideration. If successful, your work will be subject to a £15 charge to cover transportation and exhibition costs, as well as return postage after the exhibition. To reiterate, the £15 charge will apply only if your work is selected. Work must already be complete at the time of submission.

Work can be offered for sale at the exhibition if you wish and no commission will be charged for sales.

Because the works will be carried with us to Athens, each piece must be:

  • Flat
  • Sturdy enough to survive the journey (all works will be carefully packaged)
  • Light weight
  • Made of materials and substances which are suitable to be transported to Europe
  • Unframed and finished to a standard high enough to be exhibited

The deadline for submissions is 10pm on Friday 30th March and successful artists will be notified by email on Friday 6th April.

If successful you will be invited to send or deliver your work to Exchange Place Studios, Sheffield UK, where Fronteer is based. The £15 can be paid via Paypal, bank transfer or in cash if you are delivering work by hand. If successful, your work and full payment must reach us by no later than 4thMay.

The exhibition will be held at Athens School of Fine Arts from 17th – 20thMay 2018.

Unsold works will be returned to artists by no later than 20th July, unless other arrangements have been made for collection. Basic 2nd class postage costs are covered by the £15 fee. If you wish for work to be returned by other means an extra fee may apply.

  • your name
  • title of the piece
  • dimensions of the piece
  • weight of work if it is made of heavier materials (e.g. it is not on paper)
  • if it will be offered for sale, and if so, what price in Euros
  • up to 100 words about your work (this text will not be exhibited as part of the exhibition)
  • How the work should be hung (e.g. Velcro strips, nails etc.)

All work must be complete at the time of submission. Any work which varies from the original piece submitted may be rejected. Work should fit the specifications outlined below.

Don’t forget, work must be:

  • Flat (2D)

What you get for your money

Fronteer Arts understands that creative opportunities can often be hindered by financial barriers. We try to be transparent and price our open calls reasonably to ensure our costs are covered while providing viable opportunities for artists. Fees are not charged for organisers to make a profit. As such, here is a breakdown of where your £15 goes.

For your £15 you get:

  • Your work in a group exhibition, which last year was attended by over 8000 visitors, including celebrities, dignitaries, politicians and international artists, and curators.
  • Invigilation of your work
  • Transport of work to and from Athens
  • No commission on sales
  • Work returned to you via Royal Mail 2nd Class

And don’t forget, there is no fee for submitting a piece – the fee will only apply if you are successful.

Loving the Court of Love

This week has seen the opening of The Court of Love – a group art and poetry exhibition examining Valentine’s Day. The exhibition is held at Exchange Place Studios, Sheffield and has been devised and curated by myself.

Initially, the exhibition was driven by purely selfish reasons – over the last two years I have neglected the chance to use Valentine’s Day as an excuse to exhibit Perfume as Practice and I didn’t wish to miss the opportunity for a third year.

However, further research into Valentine’s Day and it’s historical and social contexts saw the exhibition develop into a group show. As I wanted my work to reveal the historical connections between fragrance and medicine, it seemed pertinent to reference within the exhibition the first occurrence of Valentine’s Day; which consisted of a feast, poetry competitions and jousting. Over time I knew that a solo exhibition wouldn’t satisfy these needs.

And so, the exhibition references a Tudor Court both in its design, in its poetry competition and through some of the artists choosing to incorporate the theme in their work. The result is a collection of high quality responses to Valentine’s Day that reference the historical virtues while just being contemporary enough not to be cliched. Indeed, the responses are varied; banquets, saints, dance steps, the zodiac, cartography, graffiti, cosmic ordering, modern culture, sexual orientation and poetry are all cited as sources of inspiration.

From a curatorial perspective, I have afforded space between each work – allowing the audience to contemplate each piece as both an isolated work or within the context of the exhibition. This allows connections to emerge between each piece while simultaneously allowing each piece to exist in it’s own right. This is how I ideally like to curate as I believe it affords an audience richer and multi-faceted engagement. Logistics, or the sheer amount of work received sometimes means I have to curate with restrictions or caveats. Here, I was able to curate how I wanted and the result is a strong and confident exhibition that utilities the immersive properties of colour transform the space thematically – allowing each work to sit with cohesion and coherence beside each other.

The Court of Love once again reinforces Exchange Place Studio’s presence as an arts venue, with the poetry competition inviting a new audience through our doors. It’s important that our programme of events remains varied, supportive and nurturing to both new and established audiences. Not only does this allow us to gather momentum and reputation but the positive virtues of providing a platform for as many sets of people as possible should always be on the agenda.
